In a preview of Bill v. Bill on tonight’s The O’Reilly Factor, Bill Maher and Bill O’Reilly traded hot air over the state of American ideology. In less than a minute, Maher manages to say “the right moved into a mental institution,” claim there is no such thing as liberal extremism, and call Republicans “religious lunatics.”
The comments came in response to O’Reilly’s claim that the Bill Maher of the ’90s program Politically Incorrect was less liberal than the modern Bill Maher of HBO’s Real Time. Maher countered, “The country changed.” He added:
There used to be ideological differences that were understandable, and there used to be moderate Republicans. That has gone away. The Republican Party is now just a bunch of religious lunatics, flat-earthers and Civil War reenactors.
Maher, whom O’Reilly groups with Michael Moore as a member of the “All-American crew,” went on to say, “There really isn’t extremism on both sides [of the political spectrum]. That’s a canard.”
