Donald Trump stole the week’s news cycle somehow, after becoming the most high profile surrogate of the Romney campaign, for better or worse. On tonight’s O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly noted that he did see that Trump “works for [Romney] financially,” but noted that the birther issue was a “minefield for Romney” because it was marginal.
Playing an attack ad from the Obama camp ridiculing Trump and, by extension, Romney, O’Reilly sought Dick Morris‘s opinion on the matter. “Why is he holding a fundraiser with Trump?” Morris joked, “to raise funds.” He noted that, while the birther issue was “marginal,” “a lot of people think it’s a legitimate issue– I don’t know, I wasn’t there when Obama was born.”
“But it’s a minefield for Romney,” O’Reilly replied,” though understanding that “it works for him financially to get Trump to help him out in this area.” Morris did not see the birther issue as a winning one for Romney either, if only because “he’s going to get all those votes anyway– what he needs to do is focus on the economy and not go on a sideshow.” The shift from attacks on Bain bode well for Romney in Morris’s mind, though: “when you’re a political consultant and you fire your best bullet and the guy is still standing, that is bad news.”
