‘Bitter’ Joe Scarborough Laments: Could GOP Have ‘Mismanaged [Fiscal Cliff] Any Worse?’
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough was none too pleased with his party’s handling of the fiscal cliff deal. Admitting he was “bitter,” Scarborough said everyone knows that spending is a problem in Washington. …Yet Republicans voted to add to the national debt?
“I am bitter,” Scarborough said. “Seriously, could the Republican Party have mismanaged this any worse?”
Paul Ryan is “off the top of my list as a fiscal hawk,” he added, “because he has been a part of adding $11 trillion to the national debt.”
“Could be a strong candidate for president in 2016,” Mark Halperin quipped. “As a Democrat.”
But back to the actual deal. Scarborough proceeded:
The Republican Party saves itself. They’re virtuous, they save themselves for 20 years. They decide, ‘Going to be chaste, I’m against raise taxes, I’m going to save myself for 20 years.’ And they waited for 20 years before giving themselves away. And they did so last night on a bill that increases taxes, that doesn’t cut a dime in spending in Washington, D.C., which everybody knows is the real problem. And third, the Congressional Budget Office scores it, and they add $4 trillion to the national debt.
“This is a bad bill that made a bad situation worse,” Council on Foreign Relations’ Richard Haass agreed.
The pair further agreed: We are “reckless” and “out of control.”
