Black GOP Candidate’s New Ad Attempts to Question Racial Stereotypes

Republican Darius Foster is currently running for a seat in the Alabama State House of Representatives. He is also a black man. And because of that seemingly unusual combination, Foster’s campaign created a video ad that attempts to question racial stereotypes and the need to put people “in a box” depending on how they look and sound.

In the 70-second clip, Foster’s voiceover explains all his idiosyncratic hobbies (e.g., listening to Frank Sinatra to get work done, attending Lil Wayne concerts, etc.) while a variety of people — men and women, both young and old, black and white — mouth his words on the screen. Eventually, Foster himself is revealed on-screen with his wife, and concludes: “Now that you know a little about me, do I really fit in a box? See you on the campaign trail.”
