Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, not known to pull punches, had largely laudatory things to say about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Face the Nation Sunday morning, saying he agreed with many of her decisions.
“She was a good Secretary of State,” Gates said. “She played a critical role in getting much tougher sanctions on Iran…We agreed in terms of the Afghan surge — if anything she was tougher than I was on that. She was ready to support [General Stanley] McChrystal’s 40,000 troops, and only went along with the 30,000 because I proposed it.”
“We certainly agreed in terms of how to deal with the very first phases of the Arab Spring, particularly disagreeing with the president on how to handle [Egyptian President Hosni] Mubarak.”
Gates said their main point of disagreement was Libya, in which Clinton supported a stronger intervention.
Gates said Clinton’s use of a personal email server was a “concern,” while questions about foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation while Clinton was at the State Department was “an issue of appearances at a minimum.”
