Bob Woodward: Fmr Trump Lawyer John Dowd Told POTUS He’s ‘Disabled’
— The Late Show (@colbertlateshow) September 11, 2018
On Monday night, legendary journalist Bob Woodward appeared on The Late Show to promote his new book Fear.
Stephen Colbert began by asking Woodward what fills him with “fear,” to which he responded with “not knowing,” adding that “we need to know what’s going on” in the White House.
Colbert then chose to address the very last page of Woodward’s new book [Warning: minor spoiler], which they both pointed out has the “F-word.”
The Late Show host explains that in the final pages of the book, Woodward describes President Donald Trump‘s former lawyer John Dowd after finishing a practice session of a potential sit-down with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Dowd had reportedly warned the president that he’d be “fitted for an orange jumpsuit” if he were to pursue an in-person interview.
“Trump goes ballistic, makes things up, starts screaming- Dowd thought had he been Mueller, he would have been fired right on the spot,” Woodward told Colbert. “‘You can’t testify. You- you are disabled.’ I mean, imagine the lawyer- your lawyer, telling you you’re disabled. ‘And you can’t testify because you can’t tell the truth. You just make things up!'”
Colbert then read the last line of the book, which is a reported quote from Dowd to the president.
“Dowd knew he couldn’t bring himself to say to the president, ‘You’re a f**king liar.'”
“I think you buried the lede!” Colbert exclaimed.
