As soon as Speaker John Boehner began taking questions at his press conference on Friday, the first hand raised inquired about whether or not Pope Francis‘ visit had anything to do with his decision.
Boehner joked at length about his emotional moment with the Pope following the latter’s address to Congress. However, despite the weight such an event had on the former altar boy, Boehner assured reporters that the pontiff’s visit did not affect his decision to resign as Speaker of the House.
“Yesterday was a wonderful day. It really was,” said Boehner. “Was I emotional yesterday? I think I was.”
He then described “a moment that really no one saw,” when the speaker and the Pope were along together before exiting the building.
“The Pope puts his arm around me, kind of pulls me to him and says, ‘Please pray for me,'” said Boehner. “Who am I to pray for the Pope? But I did.”
