House Speaker John Boehner spoke to the press following a closed-door White House meeting, followed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and there was precisely one thing they agreed on: this is all the other side’s fault. And despite the lack of any movement on both sides, all three congressional leaders said the meeting was very productive and “candid.”
Jay Carney promised Wednesday afternoon that President Obama would not negotiate in the meeting, and Boehner said that is exactly what happened. He blamed the Senate for refusing to entertain anything the House sent over, saying, “All we’re asking for here is a discussion about resolving these differences.”
Meanwhile, Reid and Pelosi said they’re open for that discussion, but it’s Boehner and his Republican colleagues who won’t budge. Reid said, “What the Speaker has to accept is yes for an answer.” He said they offered deal after deal, including on going to conference, but the government ended up shutting down because Boehner was being too stubborn.
Pelosi added that Democrats were already compromising by allowing the government funding figure that the Republicans settled on. She added, “But if they keep moving the goalposts and won’t even accept their own number.. then we can only conclude that they wanted to shut down the government.”
