Boko Haram Releases New Video Showing Kidnapped Schoolgirls
The Islamic militant group Boko Haram released a new video Monday that was obtained by Agence France-Presse, in which a number of the kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls were shown and the group’s leader offered to exchange them for the release of prisoners. This is the second video released by the group, after last week’s claiming responsibility for the abduction of over 220 Nigerian schoolgirls last month.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau appeared on the seventeen minute video speaking in Hausa and Arabic and boasting that the girls have converted to Islam. About 130 of the girls are shown praying and reciting from the Quran; two of the girls reportedly appear on camera saying they had been Christian but had converted.
“These girls, these girls you occupy yourselves with…we have indeed liberated them,” he said. “These girls have become Muslims.”
Dhekau demanded the release of prisoners in exchange for the return of the girls. “We will never release them until after you release our brethren,” Dhekau continued. “Here I mean those girls who have not submitted [converted to Islam].”
