Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford admitted to smoking crack cocaine during a press conference on Tuesday, the first confirmation of the illicit activity since a video allegedly showing him smoking surfaced earlier this year.
“Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine,” Ford told reporters. “Am I an addict? No. Have I tried it? Probably, in one of my drunken stupors, probably approximately about a year ago.”
When word of the video emerged in May, Ford denied allegations of crack cocaine use.
Ford now indicated that he wanted to see the video to get a clearer idea of his actions. “There’ve been times when I have been in a drunken stupor,” Ford said. “And that is why I want to see the tape. I want everyone in the city to see this tape. I don’t even recall there being a tape, a video. I want to see the state that I was in.”
Ford maintained he hadn’t lied, but that reporters had not asked questions properly.
“I made mistakes in the past,” Ford said. “All I can do is apologize. But it is what it is. I can’t change the past, and I can apologize to my family, my friends, my colleagues, and the people of the great city.”
