NBC announced today Brian Williams is not returning as NBC Nightly News anchor, but will instead head up MSNBC’s breaking news coverage. Lester Holt has been named the permanent NBC Nightly News anchor, making him the first-ever solo black nightly news anchor.
Alongside NBC’s announcement today, Williams himself put out a statement acknowledging he lost the trust of his colleagues and viewers. Williams repeatedly exaggerated and embellished various firsthand accounts of what he witnessed during his reporting.
NBC noted today that Williams’ statements were mostly made outside their walls, “on late-night programs and during public appearances, usually years after the news events in question.”
Here’s Williams’ statement in full:
“I’m sorry. I said things that weren’t true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and I’m determined to earn back their trust. I will greatly miss working with the team on Nightly News, but I know the broadcast will be in excellent hands with Lester Holt as anchor. I will support him 100% as he has always supported me. I am grateful for the chance to return to covering the news. My new role will allow me to focus on important issues and events in our country and around the world, and I look forward to it.”
Williams will return to MSNBC in mid-August, and opened up to Matt Lauer in an interview airing tomorrow.
