British Journalist Challenges Trump: Why Should UK Prime Minister Believe Your Promises?
During a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Theresa May, U.S. President Donald Trump was challenged by a British reporter about why May should believe any of his promises.
“You said you would help us with a Brexit trade deal, you said you would stand by us with NATO, but how can the British Prime Minister believe you?” asked The Sun‘s Tom Newton Dunn. “Because you have been known in the past to change your position on things.”
Dunn also asked what Trump and May’s conversation and relationship was like, noting that May was “the hard-working daughter of a vicar” while Trump was a “brash TV extrovert.”
“I’m not as brash as you might think,” Trump said to laughter from the press. “I can tell I think we’re going to get along very well.”
Trump insisted that he could be trusted in particular to support the UK when it came to Brexit. “I think Brexit is going to be a wonderful thing for your country. I think when it irons out, you’re going to have your own identity, and you are going to have the people that you want in your country, and you’re going to be able to make free trade deals without having somebody watching you.”
