George W. Bush on New Venture for U.S. Vets: ‘There’s No Self-Pity’ Among Veterans

Former President George W Bush spoke to ABC’s Martha Raddatz on This Week With George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning about his new project, Team Rubicon, which puts U.S. military veterans to work doing disaster response, part of an effort to both lower veteran unemployment and better integrate civilian and military communities.

“I’m in there with them,” Bush said of the veterans. “But my spirit is always uplifted because there’s no self-pity. We’ve got a society that’s incredibly comfortable and too many people saying ‘woes me.’ Not our veteran community. They don’t say ‘woes me.’ They say, ‘How else can I serve?'”

“One of the great resources we have in our nations is vets,” Bush said, indicating Jake Wood, Team Rubicon’s cofounder. “If he chooses to join the United States Marine Corps and serves in combat in two theaters, that’s a pretty unique person who’s willing to take that kind of risk and to make that kind of sacrifice. Those are characteristics which are hard to teach.”
