Carl Bernstein: Trump’s Within His Rights to Fire Sally Yates, But ‘His Presidency Is in Chaos’
Carl Bernstein said on CNN tonight that President Trump is certainly within his rights to fire Sally Yates after she went against his executive order, but argued that tonight encapsulates the “chaos” going on in the second full week of his administration.
Some have already taken to referring to this as the “Monday Night Massacre” (CNN featured this phrase in its chyron), evoking similarities to the infamous Nixon “Saturday Night Massacre” during the Watergate scandal
Bernstein, who clearly has a familiarity with that period in history, told Don Lemon “there’s a big difference” between what Trump and Nixon did.
He said Trump is certainly “within his rights” to fire her, even if he doesn’t think it’s necessarily wise:
“What’s happened here is that… his presidency is in chaos, and it’s apparent to all but most of his serious defenders.”
He said that while Trump hasn’t obstructed justice here like Nixon did, he’s “obstructed American principles” with his “authoritarian pronouncements.”
