CBS’ Bob Schieffer To Sen. McConnell: Is The Tea Party Holding The Republicans Hostage?
Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell took some time away from the ongoing debt negotiations in order to speak with Bob Schieffer. Although McConnell was sounding optimistic about the prospect of a deal being reached, Schieffer was still intrigued by the growing influence of the Tea Party and whether or not the entire Republican party was being held hostage by them?
In the first part of the video, Schieffer asked if McConnell worried about Republicans getting blamed for the ongoing debt crisis? McConnell wasn’t worried and disputed the idea that the Tea Party has done any harm to the image of the Republican party. Instead, he argued “the American people wanted us to do something about out of control spending” and now finally they’re beginning to get spending under control. Yet Schieffer didn’t understand why it seems like the Tea Party is calling the shots, using an analogy suggested by a viewer, that it’s like the teenager in charge of the family budget.
Yet acting like the wise grandfather of a large family, McConnell dismissed the idea of any internal conflict and replied “one thing that Republicans all have in common, they want a smaller government, and they don’t want to raise taxes.” In other words, blood is thicker than water, and a distaste for large government is thickest of all.
