Chaffetz on Speaker Bid: McCarthy Shouldn’t Get ‘Automatic Promotion’
Congressman Jason Chaffetz formally announced his bid to be Speaker of the House on Fox News Sunday today, arguing Kevin McCarthy shouldn’t get an “automatic promotion.”
Chaffetz said that McCarthy is a good man “but things have changed.” He didn’t say it today, but a few days ago he repudiated McCarthy for his comments connecting the Benghazi committee and Hillary Clinton‘s poll numbers, saying he should apologize.
He told Chris Wallace that he simply doesn’t believe McCarthy has the votes from House Republicans to sail through easily, and so he wants to step in to give conservatives an alternative to the status quo.
Chaffetz claimed that he only decided to run after members encouraged him to so there would be no intra-party fighting, saying, “You don’t just give an automatic promotion to the existing leadership team, that doesn’t signal change.”
