Chris Cuomo was the lone man on set Thursday morning when CNN’s New Day welcomed Shoshana Roberts, the woman who walked the streets of New York City for ten hours and captured video of men harassing her more than 100 times. While the two female hosts on the show could share their own experiences with catcalling, Cuomo could only say how “embarrassing” the whole episode was for men.
“Sometimes you pretend that you don’t speak the same language, or maybe that you can’t hear,” host Michaela Pereira said, describing her own coping mechanisms after playing a clip of the video.
Roberts described the scenarios she encounters in the video as typical and said she volunteered to appear in the piece because of her past experiences with sexual assault. “You don’t know how fast this can escalate,” she said of the catcalling, which she fears can turn into violence.
“This is one of the days it sucks to be on the couch for the guy,” Cuomo said after staying quiet for several minutes, “because this is very embarrassing.” In a sharp contrast to comments made by the men of The Five on Fox News the day before, Cuomo said “guys being guys is not an excuse.”
