Chris Hayes spoke with a Republican congressman tonight and started off the interview by asking him, “Are you going to allow Donald Trump to dominate you?”
Hayes was addressing the idea that any Republican who goes against Trump on policy runs the risk of being pressured/targeted/harassed/etc. online, and he wanted to know just how much Republicans would stick to principle if that principle clashes with what President Trump wants.
Congressman Charlie Dent assured, “We might have to check him from time to time… We’re not a bunch of potted plants.”
Hayes particularly focused on Republican debt hawkishness over the past few years and expressed skepticism that the majority party in Congress would be just as hawkish about not adding to the debt with a Republican in the White House.
Dent couldn’t guarantee anything and said that there will need to be “serious conversations” with the incoming administration about what to do.
Hayes closed the interview by asking, “Are you intimidated by President-elect Trump?” Dent said he is not.
