On Thursday night, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews wondered about the future of the Democratic Party.
“Where do you see the party going?” Matthews asked Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
Matthews invoked Hillary Clinton‘s book What Happened when she “basically said ‘People count on me by the millions and I let them down.'” and while he called her “gracious” for what she said at the beginning of the book, he called her out for “blaming” Bernie Sanders.
“Where’s the Democratic Party going to be?” Matthews rephrased his question. “As we look down the road to 2018, 2020, Bernie Sanders- with a strong regiment of supporters by a lot of young people. When he says, ‘schools are going to be free, health is going to be free.’ He makes it very popular in his brand of sorta old-time socialism has been updated to be very appealing to young people.”
He called McAuliffe and Clinton “moderate Democrats” and asked him “who’s gonna win that fight?”
The Virginia Governor didn’t directly answer the question, but responded by saying, “the person who ought to win the fight is the one with the best ideas and gets results if for doing it” and went on to tout his record.
