Chris Matthews Goes Off on White House Response to WaPo Report: ‘Somebody’s Trying to BS the Press’
Chris Matthews used Monday night’s Hardball to repeatedly slam National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster over his denial of the bombshell report that President Trump shared sensitive information with Russian officials.
Hours after the story broke, McMaster gave a brief statement where he slammed the report’s anonymous sourcing while saying that “at no time were intelligence sources or methods discussed” between Trump and the Russian officials. McMaster did not, however, deny the report’s core implication that Trump disclosed classified information as he boasted about American intelligence and its anti-ISIS operations.
As he spoke with Axios’ Jonathan Swan and Bloomberg’s Margaret Talev, Matthews noted that McMaster’s statement comes shortly after James Comey‘s firing led to the Trump Administration facing a blow to its credibility over their conflicting stories. Matthews noted that the White House may reportedly see a shake-up in the near future, and he said that “somebody’s trying to BS the press” with a “ridiculous denial” that was not actually a denial.
Earlier tonight, WaPo reporter Greg Miller defended the report by saying that McMaster was playing “word games” in an attempt to diminish the substance of the report. Matthews said much the same as he ripped into McMaster by calling him a “coo-coo clock” who “had no answers” to offer the press.
