Much of the media’s attention on Wednesday was focused on the report that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called President Donald Trump a “moron” this past summer while also threatening at one point to quit. Tillerson held an unscheduled press conference to both praise Trump and refute the claim that he almost resigned, although he notably did not deny that he tossed off that insult to describe the president.
During the ‘Trump Watch’ segment at the end of tonight’s Hardball broadcast, MSNBC host Chris Matthews had some fun with the story by referencing the dictionary to see if Tillerson could have come up with something better.
“According to the dictionary, Secretary Tillerson could have said idiot, blockhead, dunce, ignoramus, imbecile. Want more? Dope, nincompoop, dimwit, dingbat, dumbo, ditz, numbskull, numbnut, thick-head, jughead, chowderhead, doofus.”
Matthews went on to say those weren’t his words but instead the synonyms of what Tillerson “didn’t deny calling the president.” He added that if these were the days “when men were challenged to a duel we could expect to see Trump and Tillerson meet soon on the field of honor.”
