On Fox News Sunday this morning, Chris Wallace spoke with National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster and observed that it seems like the Trump administration is sending “mixed signals” on Syria this weekend.
He brought up comments made by UN Ambassador Nikki Haley suggesting a Trump administration shift towards supporting regime change, as well as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson saying that their first priority is taking out ISIS.
Haley also said that taking out ISIS is a priority, but Wallace asked McMaster, “Which is it?”
McMaster said both are right, though he did echo Haley’s line about how they don’t see a political solution so long as Bashar al-Assad is in power:
“We’re not saying that we are the ones who are going to effect that change. What we’re saying is other countries have to ask themselves some hard questions. Russia should ask themselves, ‘What are we doing here? Why are we supporting this murderous regime that is committing mass murder of its own population and using the most heinous weapons available?'”
