Fox News’ Chris Wallace said today President Donald Trump could placate his base with his fight for a border wall, but his base alone isn’t enough to win reelection.
Wallace spoke with Shepard Smith about the Senate––including a dozen Republicans––rejecting President Donald Trump‘s declaration of a national emergency at the border. Trump is set to veto it this afternoon.
The political consideration to keep in mind, he noted, is that Trump can tell his base in 2020 that he fought as hard as he could for the wall despite being blocked on it. Wallace also noted the majority opposition to building a wall in a recent poll.
Smith asked about whether Trump can successfully just stay with his base going into 2020.
“You can’t do it,” Wallace said. “There’s just not enough votes in the base.”
He pointed to how the 35-40% of solid Trump supporters aren’t enough to win and so Trump will need to “expand his base” to include independents. Wallace also said Trump’s existing base gives him a lot of “leeway,” given how Mexico isn’t paying for the wall like POTUS said on the campaign trail.
One thing that could help Trump, Wallace added, is portraying whoever the Democratic candidate is as a far-left socialist.
