Appearing this morning on ABC’s Good Morning America, Christine O’Donnell flatly denied any misuse of campaign funds in her Senate campaign, and suggested reports of a federal criminal investigation could easily be tied to Delaware’s most powerful politician, Vice President Joe Biden.
O’Donnell said her campaign had not been contacted by any federal officials, and described the reports as part of a “thug politic tactic,” promising she’d be cleared of any criminal charges.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that O’Donnell was under federal investigation for using campaign funds for personal expenses–including rent on her home, which O’Donnell has said doubled as her campaign headquarters. O’Donnell’s losing campaign set a spending record in Delaware of $7 million. According to published reports, investigators have been approached by two former O’Donnell staffers.
O’Donnell told GMA she believes it’s pure politics, and can be tied to the Obama Administration:
“We have heard of no investigation, the AP has been tipped off before my lawyer or our campaign or anyone has been notified,” O’Donnell said. “The woman leading the CREW [Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington] complaint is a former [Joe] Biden staffer who is so far to the left that she’s to the left of most leftists.”
According to the AP, the criminal probe is being conducted by two federal prosecutors and two FBI agents. The matter has yet to be referred to a grand jury.
