After the stunning news hit that President Donald Trump had fired FBI Director James Comey — an incident that is already being called the “Tuesday Night Massacre” — it was really just a matter of time before Democratic leadership publicly issued a statement on this absolute bombshell.
And Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer was the one to deliver that message. And he let it be known that he feels this very much smells like a coverup when it comes to the FBI’s investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
“Why did it happen today?” Schumer said. “We know the House is investigating Russian interference in our elections that benefitted the Trump campaign. We know the Senate is investigating.”
He continued, “We know the FBI has been looking into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians. Very serious offense. Were these investigations getting too close to home for the president?”
He further highlighted the administration’s past firings of Sally Yates and Preet Bharara, noting that this doesn’t seem like a coincidence.
Schumer concluded his statement by stating that there needs to be an independent special prosecutor appointed, otherwise the American people will suspect this firing was part of a coverup.
