On Friday afternoon’s MTP Daily, Chuck Todd held our political leaders’ feet to the fire as he called them out for changing sides when it came to our previous and present government shutdowns. In the segment he brought up the shutdown hypocrisy of President Trump, VP Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer.
“Tonight I’m obsessed with Seinfeld and the shutdown countdown. Seinfeld once observed that we root against a player when he’s on the other team and for him when he’s traded to our team. The player hasn’t changed, only his clothing has,” Todd said, invoking the iconic 90’s comedian.
“As Seinfeld put it, we’re just rooting for laundry,” The host said. “That’s especially what our politicians are doing right now.”
Todd first pointed fingers at House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi, whose stance on a government shutdown has changed since 2013 when she said, “That’s just not the way it works.”
Next, he noted that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer could possibly force a shutdown today, but in 2013 said it would be “governmental chaos.”
“President Trump says that if the government shuts down it won’t be his fault. Very different from where he was when the president was named Obama,” Todd said in regards to Trump blaming then-President Barack Obama in 2013.
He finally called out VP Mike Pence before concluding, “Funny what happens when the laundry changes.”
