Chuck Todd on Trump Attacking McCain: His Base Loves This Stuff Because It Makes ‘Liberals Cry’

Chuck Todd went off on President Donald Trump today for his continued attacks on the late John McCain, but acknowledged that his base just does not care.

Todd called out the lacking responses from many Republicans, with Charlie Sykes asking if any Republican will lose their reelection simply by the act of standing up for McCain.

The MSNBC host brought up what he hears from Republican viewers about McCain before remarking, “It is amazing how much of the president’s base views John McCain in a more negative tone than Hillary Clinton.”

And they love it when Trump does this stuff, he continued, because it triggers the libs:

“There is a part of the Trump base… that just wants to make liberals cry, I guess, or just wants to––what is it––own the libs, that that’s all the Trump candidacy is for these folks. And you see it highlighted a lot on Twitter, but I do come across these folks, I know you do too, they love it! They don’t lament it, they love it! What has happened?”

Former Republican congressman Carlos Curbelo said it’s just “political intoxication.”

Todd and his panel also talked about the less-than-forceful response from McCain’s longtime friend Lindsey Graham.
