Chuck Todd Previews Trump Address: POTUS ‘Manufactured One Heck of a Political Crisis for Himself’

Chuck Todd opened today’s MTP Daily by previewing President Donald Trump‘s big border security speech and saying, “The President has manufactured one heck of a political crisis for himself.”

Todd said, “He threatens to declare a national emergency in an attempt to bypass Congress and unilaterally build his infamous wall, but it is unclear if that’s what tonight really is about. Which raises the question: if it’s not about that, what the heck is tonight about?”

One option, he said, is that this is a show or a “PR stunt,” which means the shutdown would end up lasting a lot longer than anticipated.

He noted it’s not as if a lot of Democrats would suddenly be swayed by what the President says tonight.

The other option, Todd added, is that Trump may end up going for that national emergency declaration. But the “biggest emergency facing this administration is political and it’s self-inflicted,” he said.

Todd continued, “The President is boxed in as a shutdown he engineered drags on. His claims about why he needs the wall, who’s gonna pay for it, how he’s gonna build it, and who he thinks it would stop have been endlessly debunked.”
