President-elect Donald Trump has been picking some alums of Goldman Sachs for key administration positions, including current Goldman president and COO Gary Cohn. Chuck Todd pointed out on today’s MTP Daily that Trump himself was very critical of Goldman on the campaign trail and talked about how they have “total control” of politicians like Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton.
So Todd asked Kellyanne Conway, “How is that not hypocritical?”
Conway said that Trump was talking about Goldman’s political influence and was touting his independence from such influence.
Todd acknowledged that Trump would obviously not be the first to have Goldman alums in his Cabinet, but given what Trump publicly said, he went on to ask, “Was the trashing of Goldman simply campaign rhetoric and sort of BS?”
Conway continued to insist that Trump’s criticisms of Goldman are separate from his desire to find good people for big positions.
Last night Trump defended his picks by saying of course he wants people who “made a fortune” to help fix America.
