Chuck Todd to GOP Senator: ‘How Do You Explain the President’s Behavior’ as Nation Honored McCain?
On Meet the Press this morning, Chuck Todd spoke with one Republican senator about the message of unity sent out at John McCain‘s memorial service and how much of it will stick with President Donald Trump.
“How do you make sure that yesterday wasn’t a funeral for another era of politics?” Todd asked Sen. Dan Sullivan. “That this idea that, you know what, the Donald Trump style of politics is now how you win? And John McCain was trying to send the message, ‘No no no no no, don’t go down that road. How do you prevent yesterday from being a memorial service from that?”
Sullivan called McCain a “fighter” who believed in bipartisanship, touting how much of that is happening on Capitol Hill these days.
Todd pointed out that “the President won’t embrace it!” Sullivan offered some examples of the kind of bipartisanship he’s talking about.
Todd then asked, “How do you explain the president’s behavior in how he comported himself this week in regards to John McCain?”
Sullivan acknowledged the “tension” between them but Todd jumped in to say it sounded like he was “trying to gloss over it.”
