Chuck Todd got to sit down for an interview with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and he asked him about the money the U.S. gave to Iran that came under intense fire domestically.
Todd asked Rouhani, “Were the hostages being held until the money was transferred over?”
Rouhani told him there were two separate issues at play, one of them being the money “belonging to the nation of Iran” that the U.S. seized, and the other being the release of prisoners “on both sides.”
He said there are ongoing talks about Iran receiving the rest of its money, seemingly dismissing the idea it was a ransom without saying so directly.
The State Department said earlier this year the payment was contingent upon the prisoners’ release, but insisted it wasn’t a ransom because Iran went first.
