Chuck Todd: Trump Was Smart to Skip WHCD, ‘He’s Not Very Good at Self-Deprecation’
NBC’s Chuck Todd spoke with Conan O’Brien last night about President Trump‘s decision to skip the White House Correspondents Dinner, which Todd basically said was a good move for him.
O’Brien, who spoke at the dinner in 2013, asked Todd about whether the president was “wise” to avoid that event. Todd said he certainly was.
He recalled that infamous 2011 WHCD when both Barack Obama and Seth Meyers mercilessly mocked Trump on birtherism and a potential presidential candidacy. It’s believed that event in particular drove Trump to his decision to run for president in the first place.
“I get why he skipped it,” Todd added. “He’s not very good at self-deprecation… He does not know how to do that. So if you don’t know how to do it, don’t do it.”
He also observed that it looked good for Trump to be rallying with the people while everyone else in D.C. was hobnobbing with celebrities.
