CNN Anchor Goes After ‘Homophobic’ Hallmark for Removing ‘Gay’ From Christmas Ornament

In a Facebook post, CNN anchor Carol Costello declared Hallmark “homophobic” for removing the word “gay” from a Christmas ornament plastered with lyrics from well-known carol “Deck the Halls.”

For its “Holiday Sweater” ornament, Hallmark changed the words “Don we now our gay apparel” to “Don we now our fun apparel,” likely out of sensitivity to the derogatory use of the word “gay.”

“Oh Hallmark. You didn’t,” Costello wrote. “Oh, wait, you did.”

She quoted Hallmark’s official explanation:

“When the lyrics to ‘Deck the Halls’ were translated from Gaelic and published in English back in the 1800’s, the word ‘gay’ meant festive or merry,” according to a statement released Wednesday. “Today it has multiple meanings, which we thought could leave our intent open to misinterpretation.”

And then she handed down her final judgment: “Homophobic? I say, yes you are.”
