Everyone else in the media might as well pack up their bags and go home, because CNN managed to ask singer-songwriter Willie Nelson the most important question of the 2016 presidential race. Would he “ever smoke one with Donald Trump?”
Nelson’s stance on marijuana is by no means a state secret. After all, the man released a song about his herbal remedy of choice earlier this year on Apr. 20. (Otherwise known as “420” for the uninitiated.) But if he ever had the chance, would he roll up a joint and kick it with the Donald?
THIS IS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION, WILLIE. ANSWER IT.
“I’ll smoke one with anybody,” he laughed.
“I don’t have anything personal against Donald. I think he’s a great hustler, and as a brother hustler I wish him well,” Nelson continued. “He’s a great salesman. Whether that will make a great president or not, I don’t know.”
The short piece goes on to ask Nelson about several pertinent political issues, especially the push back against President Barack Obama‘s efforts to welcome Syrian refugees into the United States. He answers these questions well enough to satisfy the segment, though his initial response is telling: “I don’t care.”
But would Trump smoke one with Nelson? He has accused rival Jeb Bush of occasionally imbibing, and Late Night host Seth Meyers recently poked fun at the Republican presidential candidate’s position on legalization. Back in October, Trump “softened” his position on marijuana at a Nevada political rally when he said that states should be left to decide.
