CNN Guest: Dems ‘Twisting Themselves Up in Knots’ Over Whether to Be Seen with Obama
John King’s Inside Politics panel wondered if Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke was being “too cute” in trying to avoid President Barack Obama during his Wisconsin visit, but then tweeting that she met with him privately.
“Some of these Democrats are twisting themselves all up in knots trying to figure out what the right thing to do is,” said Associated Press White House correspondent Julie Pace. “Do you appear with him? Do you not? She tried to split the difference. She didn’t appear in front of cameras but did have a private meeting with him. …Just have the moment and move on. Don’t create a lot of drama around it.”
“If you look at the polling,” New York Times’ Jonathan Martin said, “what is so key about Mary Burke in Wisconsin is she turns out Democratic voters in that state, who typically only show up in presidential years. In that sense, she needs President Obama. A picture of her with President Obama in Milwaukee is going to do her a lot of good politically.”
“That’s one of the biggest things to watch from here on out in the final two months,” King said. “Where does the president go, who hugs him and who doesn’t…and do some Democrats late in the campaign take the risk and say, ‘You know what, I need to turn out African Americans’?”
