During a week that began with high-profile health care hearings on Capitol Hill and a mass shooting incident at Los Angeles International Airport, CNN saw its lowest ratings in both the 25-54 demo and total viewers in over a year. Averaging 385K total viewers and just 95K in the 25-54 demo, CNN had its worst week of ratings since August 2012. Jeff Zucker took over as head of the network at the beginning of 2013
In basic cable rankings, CNN was #32 in total day and #37 in primetime overall. In contrast, MSNBC was #28 in total day and #31 in primetime and Fox News was far above both networks at #3 in total day and #2 in primetime. With 2.382M viewers to Fox’s 1.989M, ESPN was the only cable channel with more eyeballs than Fox in primetime last week.
While CNN did see a small bump over MSNBC in total viewers Friday night with its continued coverage of the LAX shooting, the network consistently fell below its competitors during the month of October in all major categories. CNN proved during the government shutdown that it can still see major viewer spikes when big news breaks, but on a night-to-night basis, it is having some serious trouble staying in the game.
