CNN Legal Analyst Paul Callan: Trump Is ‘Cowardly Backstabbing’ Jeff Sessions
CNN legal analyst Paul Callan delivered a scathing rebuke to President Donald Trump after Trump slammed Attorney General Jeff Sessions during an interview on Fox News.
“This is cowardly backstabbing by the President of the United States against an Attorney General who has shown enormous integrity and backbone in standing up to Mr. Trump. The president’s been trying to force a resignation of Jeff Sessions when he, the president, has the right to fire him if he wishes to do so,” Callan began.
He continued on: “But the president is too fearful of doing that because it may subject him to obstruction of justice charges…And I think Sessions deserves enormous credit for standing up to the president, showing backbone, and integrity by remaining in office.”
Callan was referring to remarks Trump had made about Sessions during an interview with Fox News with Ainsley Earhardt.
“I put in an attorney general who never took control of the Justice Department. Jeff Sessions never took control of the Justice Department. It’s sort of an incredible thing,” Trump said during the interview which aired Thursday morning.
In a statement following the airing of Trump’s remarks, Sessions fired back, saying; “While I am Attorney General, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations. I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action.”
