The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has been providing Americans with a bit of holiday cheer for years with their “Santa Tracker” service. The feature supposedly uses global military radar installations to track Santa Clause’s progress as he travels around the world delivering presents to children. This year, however, the military wanted the “Santa Tracker” to have a more “operational feel.” To that end, they will be providing Santa Clause with an F-18 Fighter escort who will protect Santa as he makes is rounds.
“This year, it looks more military than usual,” said CNN defense reporter Barbara Starr. “Santa has a couple of F-18s on his tail guiding him around the world.”
“The military says they planned all this,” she added. “They wanted it to have more of an operational feel.”
Starr noted that children’s welfare advocates have expressed concern about the militarization of Christmas.
