CNN Panel Blasts Trump Legal Team’s Russia Strategy: Giuliani and Putin ‘Have the Same Mission’
A CNN panel on Monday morning analyzed Rudy Giuliani‘s latest, very candid comments in an interview about his client President Donald Trump and the battle against Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s Russia probe.
Giuliani told CNN’s Dana Bash over the weekend that the basis of the special counsel’s Russia investigation is “illegitimate” because it stemmed from former FBI director James Comey‘s leak of memos to the press detailing the president’s apparent attempts to obstruct justice.
CNN national security analyst Samantha Vinograd said on CNN she’s “a little disturbed when Rudy Giuliani and Vladimir Putin seem to have the same mission here.”
“We have two guys who seem fixated on undermining the credibility of the Department of Justice and the investigation,” Vinograd said. “They seem to be playing from exactly the same playbook. And you have to wonder at what point is a responsible member from the administration going to come forward, and just from an intelligence standpoint say, ‘Mr. President, your personal lawyer is going on television and making the exact points that Vladimir Putin wants him to and that’s really… hurting us protect our country.'”
CNN host Alisyn Camerota noted that Giuliani was honest in his interview that his strategy is focused on public opinion, as this case will ultimately come down to an issue of impeachment. “It does boil down to impeachment,” Camerota said.
“It also sounds like propaganda a little bit,” Vinograd said. “We’re talking about a P.R. strategy. The president’s personal lawyer is going on television and literally spewing inaccuracies. We could spend an entire segment dissecting what he said. That sounds like propaganda to me.”
Josh Campbell, a former FBI agent who worked with Comey and now serves as a CNN analyst, added that the Trump team’s strategy is to undermine the credibility of U.S. law enforcement.
“They are tearing down law enforcement, trying to destroy the Department of Justice for this P.R. campaign, in order to discredit the investigators,” he said. “That’s going to cause lasting damage.”
