CNN: Bad Optics for Obama to Golf After Talking Iraq Airstrikes?
CNN aired video earlier this afternoon of President Obama golfing on his vacation, hours after speaking in-depth about Iraq airstrikes. Brooke Baldwin ran the video and pointed out how, for the White House, the optics look really bad right now. After all, the president did go from speaking about Iraq to getting on a plane to Martha’s Vineyard to golfing just minutes after he arrived.
Margaret Hoover said that presidents can easily “run the free work from their vacations,” but to have the cameras rolling when you’re playing golf, “optically, doesn’t suggest the seriousness” presidents are normally granted.
Professor Julian Zelizer pointed out that there are just “certain issues you have to be in Washington for, if you’re dealing with Congress and trying to lobby them” for one. Of course it looks bad, he said, and White House staffers should really be giving this some thought over the next few days.
