On Tuesday, CNN’s Arwa Damon reported that the renewed violence in Ukraine has prompted the interim president of the country to declare the Geneva peace agreement “off the table.” She added that the discovery of mutilated bodies in disputed areas of Ukraine was “chillingly reminiscent of the violence that we saw taking place in Iraq.”
Damon reported that, over the weekend, two bodies were removed from a local river in East Ukraine. Both, she said, showed signs of torture.
One of the bodies removed from a river in East Ukraine belonged to a local government official. The violence drove interim President Arseniy Yatsenyuk to assert that the peace agreement reached in Geneva last week was no longer in effect and his government was planning further “anti-terror operations.”
“These are, of course, incredibly disturbing developments as the conflict here continues to unravel rather than de-escalate,” Damon said.
“It is chillingly reminiscent of the violence that we saw taking place in Iraq, where unidentified, mutilated bodies were regularly being pulled out of the Tigris river,” Damon added.
