CNN Taunts MSNBC and Morning Joe with Full-Page NY Times Ad

After beating MSNBC’s Morning Joe in the ratings for several months straight, CNN took out a full-page ad in today’s New York Times touting its morning shows New Day (CNN) and Morning Express (HLN), while poking fun at its rival network.

“Sorry, Joe,” the ad blares. “While you were leaning forward, we were moving ahead!” it continues, in reference to MSNBC’s “Lean Forward” motto.

As the ad boasts, New Day has beaten Joe for four straight months in total viewership, and seven straight months in the key 25-54 demo. HLN’s Morning Express has also overtaken Joe, beating the MSNBC show in the demo for nine straight months.

What makes this ad particularly incisive is that when New Day began to outpace Morning Joe last spring, the latter’s host Joe Scarborough chalked it up to MH370 coverage. Several months later, he once again dismissed the CNN victories, telling Variety that “CNN does very well when the world is blowing up” — i.e., Ferguson, Israel, etc.

Scarborough hit back at the ad on Twitter this morning:

But as you may recall, New Day has only been on-air for 19 months, making the five-year comparison a bit tricky.
