A Republican student refusing to support Donald Trump confronted Speaker Paul Ryan at tonight’s CNN town hall over his decision to support the GOP nominee so vociferously.
“It concerns me,” Zachary Marcone said, “when the Republican leadership is supporting somebody who’s blatantly racist and has said Islamophobic statements.”
He asked Ryan, “How can you morally justify your support for this kind of candidate, somebody who could be very destructive?”
Ryan shot back, “That basically means you’re going to help elect Hillary Clinton.”
Basically, Ryan’s argument was that sure, Trump has said “wrong” things that he doesn’t think reflect well on conservative values, but those things––the racism and Islamophobia––are not quite as alarming as the prospect of a Clinton presidency.
He also attempted to make the case that Trump would be much more likely to help the Republican party agenda than Clinton would.
