CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield Battles Guest Who Calls Obamacare Promises Outright ‘Lies’

Describing herself as a excessively optimistic, CNN anchor Ashleigh Banfield battled with conservative guest Will Cain after he asserted that the president’s promises on grandfathered healthcare plans under Obamacare have thus far proven to be outright “lies.”

Cain was on to discuss the controversy over millions of Americans losing their previous health insurance despite the administration’s repeated promises that “If you like your plan, you can keep it,” under a grandfather clause in the healthcare law.

“How could they not have known about [the failure of this] grandfather provision?” Cain asked. “They did know. It was not a mistake. It was a lie. You cannot portray this any other way.”

“Well, that’s some pretty strident language to say it was a lie,” Banfield interjected. “How do you know that?”

“It was designed to destroy the individual healthcare market,” the conservative guest replied. “They needed those people to go into the exchanges. Why did they need people to go in there? They thought it was better. They thought it provided better plans than those available on the individual market. They needed those young, healthy people to go in…”

“I hear all that,” Banfield dismissed. “You know what? For you to say — Look, maybe I’m a bit of a Pollyanna, but I don’t like to suggest that the plan was launched with lies.”

After co-panelist Marc Lamont Hill suggested that Obamacare was meant to act as “consumer protection” by offering “better” plans for healthcare consumers, Cain responded: “It was intended for this purpose; it was sold under different language. That is an untruth.”

“I just don’t like you saying it was a lie when you were not there devising that policy,” Banfield scolded. “In a court of law, you’d be run out of the room.”
