CNN’s Candy Crowley To GOP House Reps: ‘Has The Speaker Lost Control Of The Caucus?
CNN’s Candy Crowley asked Republican Representatives Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) and Steve LaTourette (R-OH) Sunday whether House Speaker John Boehner was having trouble with his leadership: “Has the speaker lost control of the caucus?”
LaTourette initially deferred to Mulvaney, who responded with a firm “no.” “I get asked that a lot the last couple days,” he said. “I think the vote on Thursday is being portrayed as a vote on leadership and it wasn’t.”
Crowley pressed on, noting to Mulvaney that Boehner couldn’t get his “Plan B” for the fiscal cliff passed: “Isn’t that a view into his leadership?”
Mulvaney disagreed and said in his opinion, the public believes that only staunch conservatives voted against Boehner’s plan, when it was really a mix of the party. He reiterated his point that Boehner wasn’t losing control, saying, “This was a legislation-specific vote and not a vote on leadership.”
LaTourette added his support, saying,
“The reason John Boehner has trouble managing the House Republican conference isn’t a lack of leadership. It’s because we have a lot of divergent opinions and he lets people participate, which wasn’t the case in the past.”
“He’s paying the price for that at the moment,” Crowley quipped.
