On CNN this afternoon, after Jim Acosta said President Trump appears to have listened to his critics, David Gergen said the early reports of the President’s meeting with Vladimir Putin are encouraging.
Both Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that election interference was raised in the meeting (Tillerson said Trump opened with it), but Lavrov is claiming that Trump accepted Putin’s denial (something the White House is already pushing back on).
Gergen told Brooke Baldwin that based on what he’s heard from early reports, “this could have been one of the most productive, promising meetings President Trump has held since he took office.”
“This is presidential,” he added. “This was big-league stuff.”
A few minutes later, Gergen also observed that the length of the meeting was encouraging and even said Trump “seemed presidential today”:
“The bigger takeaway here for me right now is… he seemed presidential today. And we actually had a Secretary of State who was explaining stuff to us. How often have we had that?… This seemed like we were back to normal life for the first time––one of the only times in the last few months. This is what we except from our President. We may agree or disagree with the particulars, but we want our President to show leadership and be at a Presidential level, and I thought we saw more of that today, and I think we should be encouraged by that.”
