CNN’s Douglas Brinkley: ‘Disrespectful’ for Trump to Tweet During McCain Memorial Service
There were a few implicit rebukes of President Donald Trump in some of the eulogies to John McCain today. Trump and McCain did not get along, and Trump was not invited today. The President did, however, tweet as usual during the memorial service.
Trump was tweeting earlier this morning too, but if anyone was wondering whether he would refrain from doing so during the service itself, he did not:
There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. If we don’t make a fair deal for the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out. Congress should not interfere w/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off…
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 1, 2018
….Remember, NAFTA was one of the WORST Trade Deals ever made. The U.S. lost thousands of businesses and millions of jobs. We were far better off before NAFTA – should never have been signed. Even the Vat Tax was not accounted for. We make new deal or go back to pre-NAFTA!

Wolf Blitzer also noted that during the service, Trump left the White House and went to his golf club.
CNN presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said, “I thought that was disrespectful of President Trump to be tweeting during the memorial service. I might be old-fashioned in that regard, but I think he should have taken a time-out.”
He also echoed the words of those who spoke today about McCain’s support for dissidents around the world and his contempt for Russia.
