Last night on CNN, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, called out the network for what he believed to be incredibly misleading coverage of the current crisis in Gaza. Well, tonight, Erin Burnett followed up that conversation with a fact-check of Dermer’s comments and a discussion over whether he had a point about their coverage.
Dermer made several contentions about CNN’s coverage, including that the network did not bring up the U.N. condemning Hamas for housing weapons in U.N. schools. But Burnett refuted Dermer’s points by showing footage of CNN’s coverage, in which CNN reporters and anchors mention the very things Dermer said they weren’t.
Karl Penhaul, the CNN reporter whose work was criticized by Dermer, dismissed this as part of the propaganda war being waged by both sides in the conflict. Michael Oren, Dermer’s predecessor, said that Hamas’ strategy is to drag Israel into Gaza so that dead Palestinian children are photographed by the media, and then the world slowly turns against Israel.
