In a new book titled What Happened that will be released next week, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton took some shots at her Democratic primary opponent. Pointing out that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) isn’t a Democrat and got into the race to “disrupt the Democratic Party,” Clinton also placed a lot of blame at Sanders’ feet for her losing to Donald Trump in the general election.
“[H]is attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump’s ‘Crooked Hillary’ campaign,” she wrote.
In a CNN panel discussion on Clinton’s criticisms of Sanders in the book, CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin agreed that Sanders did lay the groundwork for Trump when it came to the current president’s attacks on the former First Lady.
“Bernie Sanders set up the Crooked Hillary image through talking about the speeches to Goldman Sachs, talking about how she was in the pocket of Wall Street,” Toobin said, noting the numerous times Sanders hit Clinton over paid Wall Street speeches.
After the panelists Gloria Borger and David Swerdlick weighed in, stating that it was probably good advice for Hillary not to pick too many fights with Bernie, Toobin once again noted that Sanders handed the “Crooked” argument to Trump.
“Especially about the idea of personal corruption,” he stated. “The idea about that there was something about her that was untrustworthy, which was something that Bernie Sanders made clear.”
