Discussing his latest piece in the New Yorker magazine, CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin scolded the United States Supreme Court for continuing to refuse to allow television cameras into that body during oral arguments. Toobin told CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer that he has a theory as to why the Court will not allow television cameras in during proceedings: they do not want to be made the butt of comedian Jon Stewart’s jokes.
“Why don’t they have cameras there so we can watch these justices go about their business?” Blitzer asked Toobin.
“Wolf, I can answer that question in two words,” Toobin replied. “Jon Stewart.”
“They don’t want to be made fun of on The Daily Show,” he continued. “They don’t want to have their behavior, their questions, their public performance open to public scrutiny.”
“I think it’s disgraceful. I think it’s terrible,” Toobin opined. “But, you know, it’s their candy store and they get to decide who sees it. But it’s just totally inappropriate that these sessions are not televised.”
